Public Holiday: Emancipation Day

This significant public holiday celebrates the end of slavery in Barbados (and throughout the British Empire) on August 1st 1834 and the achievement of full emancipation four years later.
Official celebrations and community events mark this day of reflection and remembrance. It’s a time to honor the strength and resilience of our ancestors who endured the horrors of slavery and emerged with freedom and hope.
While the Slavery Abolition Act came into effect in 1834, it did not immediately materialize into full freedom for the enslaved. A four year ‘apprenticeship’ period followed, during which time the formerly enslaved people were legally free, but they were still bound to their former owners and required to perform some work with no compensation.
